Geysir Car Rental is a family run company originally founded in 1973. After having merged into a foreign franchise in the 1990s company was revived in its current form in 2003 offering a value added car rental and related services based on web driven sales and management cutting out unnecessary, costly and complicated factors, benefiting our clients. We were the first car rental in Iceland to offer instant quotes and availability based on live inventory and have continued to evolve our business to help our customers easily find and book vehicles for their adventures in Iceland. Geysir Car Rental has gone through a lot of change and growth in the last decade and now it's one of the largest non-franchised national rental companies in Iceland.

From day one, our company has been run around our enthusiasm about cars. We keep the quality and experience of low-cost car rental at a level others don't reach, and we do this by offering a range and service we know will satisfy all your needs. Geysir Car Rental offers a wide fleet of new and well maintained American, European and Asian cars that meet all the requirements of motoring conditions in Iceland. Everything from small economy vehicles to large 4x4 Beasts and Motorhomes in various sizes. We photograph our own vehicles, so what you see on our website are the actual vehicles we offer. We do not substitute what you booked for a “similar” vehicle unless we absolutely have to.

Have you queued at the rental counter in an airport? Not a lot of fun, and not how your holiday should start. Our simple to use online booking takes care of all the rental paperwork up front, paving way for a speedy service, handing you the keys to your car so you can be on your way after we quickly verify your drivers license and credit card.

We are headquartered at Keflavik International Airport. In addition we have a branch in Reykjavik and a wide network of partners around the country. A dedicated 24/7 road side assistance team makes sure to keep your car happy and you safe and sound.

If you need further information, you can see our frequently asked questions and if we haven’t answered all your questions there then please send us an email to or give us a call at 00354 455 0000

  • What is Included in rental price

    All our rentals include:
    CDW insurance
    TPL insurance

    TP insurance

    Unlimited kilometers

    Breakdown assistance

    24% VAT tax

  • Are there any hidden fees?

There are no hidden fees. The calculator on our website gives you the total amount you have to pay, including all extra cost and 24% local Value Added Tax.

  • What are your opening hours?

We offer 24/7 service at the Keflavik International Airport. During the winter season our office is open from 04:00 - 18:00 but don't worry if you are arriving after hours. Just be sure to make your booking at the expected arrival and return time and supply us with your flight number so we know when to expect you and we'll be at the office to hand you the car when you arrive.

  • What is your cancelation policy?

All our rentals are fully refundable until 48 hours before the reserved start time of the booking.

Early returns are not refundable but unused rental days can be used as rental voucher for a second rental, valid for 365 days from the rental end date.

  • What insurance options do you offer?

All our rentals include Collision Damage Waiver (CDW), Theft Protection (TP) and Third Party Liability (TPL).
We also offer the following extras:
SCDW = Super Collision Damage Waiver can be added to all rentals. The SCDW coveres the same types of damages as the CDW but lowers the excess of the renter to ISK 45.000 on standard vehicles and ISK 60.000 for 4x4 vehicles should you have an accident.

GP = Gravel Protection can be added to all rentals. Damages caused by gravel can happen on any road, paved or unpaved. The GP fully coveres damages caused by gravel being tossed to the boddy of the car, front headlights and front window, reducing the cost of such damages to zero.

SAAP = Sand And Ash Protection. The CDW and SCDW insurance do not cover damages caused by sand, gravel, ash, pumice, or other kind of earth material blown onto the vehicle. Loose ash and fine grained sand covers parts of Iceland in the aftermath of various volcanic activities in recent years. On a windy day this whirls up and blows towards anything in it's path and gives it an undesired dull, matte finish. The SAAP extra insurance extends the CDW and SCDW coverage to these kinds of damages.

  • What is not covered by the CDW/SCDW insurance?

The CDW/SCDW does not cover the following:

Intentional damages or damages caused by gross negligence on the part of the renter.

Damages resulting from the driver being under the influence of controlled or illegal substances, or in any other way being unable to operate the vehicle in a safe manner.

Damages occurred by a race or test driving.

Damages occurred by war, revolution, civil unrest, or riots.

    Damages caused by animals.

Holes and marks burned into seats, carpets, or mats.

Damages affecting only wheels, tires, suspension, batteries, glass (other than windows), radios, or loss by theft of parts of the vehicle and damage resulting from this.

Damages caused by driving on rough roads, e.g. to the transmission, the drive or drive shaft, and other parts in or attached to the chassis. Damages to the chassis, or any part of the car, resulting from the vehicle scraping bottom on rough roads. The same applies to damages occurring when stones are thrown up, striking the underside of the car while being driven. The underside of the car is not insured.

Damages resulting from driving in places where driving is banned, such as paths, tracks, banks of snow, ice, unbridged rivers or streams, beaches, places only accessible at low tide, or other trackless areas. The car is not insured when crossing rivers or driving in water of any kind. River crossing must be done with extreme care.

Damages to the car caused by driving on mountain roads and roads marked F on a map or a road sign, including Kjölur (road 35), Kaldidalur (road 550) and Sprengisandur (road 26) routes. (This does not extend to 4wd and all wheel drive cars accepted by Geysir for use on mountain roads – approved cars are insured on all marked roads and tracks).

Water damages to the car, its electrical system, accessories or engine.

Damages caused by sand, gravel, ash, pumice, or other kind of earth material being blown onto the vehicle.

No compensation will be paid for damage caused by sea spray/seawater, if the vehicle is transported by sea.

Reference is made to the general conditions for accident insurance (Icelandic: kaskótrygging) as set by TM insurance company at

  • What is my rental excess and deposit?

Our CDW insurance has an excess of ISK 350.000. We also offer the SCDW to lower the excess to ISK 45.000 on normal cars and ISK 60.000 on 4x4 cars, passenger vans and motorhomes.

A deposit matching the rental excess will be charged to the credit/debit card provided in the start of the rental.

The deposit will be released when the car is returned and meets the requirements of Geysir.

  • Can I rent without a credit card?

Yes, you can make your reservation using a debit card or prepaid credit cards. The Debit/Credit card must have a 16 digit code and enough funds to cover the rental excess.

  • Are winter tyres included?

All our rentals include winter tyres from November 1st – April 15th

  • How does the Breakdown assistance work?

In the case of a mechanical breakdown, Geysir offers an emergency roadside assistance available during office hours. Geysir also offers a 24/7 emergency phone in the unlikely event that a car will break down out of office hours. Geysir has a wide net of service partners all around the island that can assist our customers in the case of a breakdown.

In the case of an accident the customer must inform the breakdown assistance as soon as possible. Towing fees and other charges may apply if Geysir has to recover the car.

  • Am I allowed on F-roads

You may not drive on mountain or highland roads, or roads marked “F” on a map or a road sign, unless the car is a 4 wheel drive or all wheel drive, intended and accepted for such use by Geysir. The renter/driver may not drive the car where prohibited by law, i.e. off beaten tracks or marked roads, in unmarked paths or tracks, on beaches or other sandy areas, or any other trackless areas. Damage incurred while crossing rivers or large streams will not be covered by any insurance so any river crossing should be done with extreme caution. When planning a trip to Iceland we highly recommend planning your trip in advance and check out the road conditions before you set off. Up to date information about road conditions can be found here: Vegagerdin

  • How do I pay for my rental?

Our booking engine offers a secure online payment with Credit and Debit cards. We accept MasterCard and Visa. When making an online payment the full amount is paid when the card is processed on our website.

  • My card keeps getting rejected, I know I have sufficient funds on it, what can I do?

Our payment gateway will only tell us that the card was approved or declined, for security reasons it never reveals more information. The first thing you may want to check is the obvious; "are all my card details entered correctly". If you bank outside of Iceland you may want to check if your bank has an upper limit on transactions outside your banking country and temporarily raise that for the rental payment. Your bank may also impose a general upper limit on your card for a given time period even if your card has the funds to cover the rental. If you keep having problems you can always contact us at and we’ll help you process your reservation.

  • How old do I have to be to rent a car?

Our minimum age requirement is 20 years. On Specialty 4x4 vehicles, motorhomes or passenger vans the minimum age requirement is 25 years.

  • What do I need at pickup?

A credit/debit card in the drivers name with enough available funds to cover the rental excess is required at pickup. The credit/debit card must be valid for over 6 months after the rental period ends. We accept Master Card and Visa.

Each driver must provide a driving license that they have held for 1 year or more. An internation driving license is only requried if the license is printed with non-Roman Alphabet.

A rental voucher must be provided at the start of the rental. We do not require the voucher to be printed, mobile vouchers are accepted and encouraged.

  • I don’t trust online payments, are yours safe to use?

We use a pci certified payment provider to process your card payment over an encrypted and secure connection. No one within our company even gets to see your card details, and they are not at any time stored in our systems as they get sent directly to the payment provider in a separate encrypted transmission. Once approved the provider gives sends us a transaction id for us to keep along with the four last digits of your card number for your reference. Full card details are never, ever stored in any of our systems, so in the unlikely event that we were to experience a security breach there would be nothing of value for anyone there. Our payment provider does, as per our terms and conditions, store account details for us in case we need to request coverage for post rental incidental cost.
