On the road and car returns

  • expand_moreHow does the Breakdown assistance work?
In the case of a mechanical breakdown, Geysir offers an emergency roadside assistance available during office hours. Geysir also offers a 24/7 emergency phone if a car will break down out of office hours. Geysir has a wide net of service partners all around the island that can assist our customers in the case of a breakdown. In the case of an accident the customer must inform the breakdown assistance as soon as possible. Towing fees and other charges may apply if Geysir has to recover the car
  • expand_moreAm I allowed on F-roads?
You may not drive on mountain or highland roads, or roads marked “F” on a map or a road sign, unless the car is a 4 wheel drive or all wheel drive, intended and accepted for such use by Geysir. The renter/driver may not drive the car where prohibited by law, i.e. off beaten tracks or marked roads, in unmarked paths or tracks, on beaches or other sandy areas, or any other trackless areas. Damage incurred while crossing rivers or large streams will not be covered by any insurance so any river crossing should be done with extreme caution. When planning a trip to Iceland we highly recommend planning your trip in advance and check out the road conditions before you set off. Up to date information about road conditions can be found on www.road.is
  • expand_moreWhat happens if we break down?
For any mechanical failures phone the Roadside Assistance team on 455 0000. They will find the best way to deal with the problem.
  • expand_moreWhat are the speed restrictions?
The speed limits are well marked on all roads and the maximum is 90 km/h on the open road, down to 30 km/h in built up areas. If caught speeding fines are very expensive.
  • expand_moreWhat do I do if I get a parking ticket?
If you´re unfortunate to get a parking ticket take it to any bank and pay it as soon as you can. It´s cheaper if you pay immediately. If Geysir has to deal with it there is an administration charge added to the price.
  • expand_moreCan I drive in bad weather?
The short answer is you should exercise caution at all times. High winds are one of the main causes of damage and accidents and you should really try to restrict your travelling in these conditions. Always check the relevant agencies websites for up to date information and make your plans accordingly. Weather: en.vedur.is Roads: road.is and Safetravel.is
  • expand_moreWhere and when should I return my car?
Your return location and time will be stated on your rental contract. If you wish to change these details you must let us know as soon as you can in our phone 455 0000 or on info@geysir.is. Always leave the minimum of two hours between the vehicle return time and your flight check-in time.
  • expand_moreHow does your return process work?
When you return to a Geysir location, make sure the fuel tank is completely full, take all your luggage out of the car and take the keys into the office. The process usually takes a few minutes. However, if damages are to be dealt with it will take longer. It is the renter´s responsibility to leave enough time between returning the car and the flight check-in time. If you are returning after our opening hours you put the keys in our drop-box which is inside of our lobby and our staff will inspect the car as soon as our office opens.
  • expand_moreWhat if I get a flat tyre?
In case of a puncture or damage to tyres it is the renter´s responsibility to have it repaired. As pointed out in the registration slideshow, insurance does not cover damage to tyres or wheels. If the tyre pressure warning light comes on you should stop at the first petrol station or garage and use the air line to check the pressure. (The pressure chart is found on the driver's side door frame of the car.) More often than not it will be a false alarm but should always be checked.
