- All our rentals include:
- CDW insurance
- TPL insurance
- TP insurance
- Unlimited kilometers
- Breakdown assistance
- 24% VAT tax
There are no hidden fees. The calculator on our website gives you the total amount you have to pay, including all extra cost and 24% local Value Added Tax.
All our rentals include Collision Damage Waiver (CDW), Theft Protection (TP) and Third Party Liability (TPL).
We also offer the following extras:
- SCDW = Super Collision Damage Waiver. The SCDW covers the same types of damages as the CDW but lowers the excess of the renter to ISK 45.000 on family cars and ISK 60.000 for 4x4 vehicles, passenger vans and motorhomes in the case of a collision damage.
- GP = Gravel Protection. Damages caused by gravel can happen on any road, paved or unpaved. The GP fully covers damages caused by gravel being tossed to the body of the car, front headlights and front window, reducing the cost of such damages to zero.
- SAAP = Sand And Ash Protection. The CDW and SCDW insurance do not cover damages caused by sand, gravel, ash, pumice, or other kind of earth material blown onto the vehicle. Loose ash and fine grained sand covers parts of Iceland in the aftermath of various volcanic activities in recent years. On a windy day this whirls up and blows towards anything in it's path and gives it an undesired dull, matte finish. The SAAP extra insurance extends the CDW and SCDW coverage to these kinds of damages.
- ZE = Zero Excess. To give the renter a complete peace of mind, we offer Zero Excess insurance to reduce the rental excess to ZERO. The Zero Excess covers the same damages as the CDW and SCDW does but in the case of a collision the renter liability is reduced to Zero.
All our rentals are fully refundable until 48 hours before the reserved start time of the booking.
Early returns are not refundable but unused rental days can be used as rental voucher for a second rental, valid for 365 days from the rental end date.
The CDW/SCDW does not cover the following (as stated in our Terms and conditions):
- - Intentional damages or damages caused by gross negligence on the part of the renter.
- - Damages resulting from the driver being under the influence of controlled or illegal substances, or in any other way being unable to operate the vehicle in a safe manner.
- - Damages occurred by a race or test driving.
- - Damages occurred by war, revolution, civil unrest, or riots.
- - Damages caused by animals.
- - Holes and marks burned into seats, carpets, or mats.
- - Damages affecting only wheels, tires, suspension, batteries, glass (other than windows), radios, or loss by theft of parts of the vehicle and damage resulting from this.
- - Damages caused by driving on rough roads, e.g. to the transmission, the drive or drive shaft, and other parts in or attached to the chassis.
- - Damages to the chassis, or any part of the car, resulting from the vehicle scraping bottom on rough roads. The same applies to damages occurring when stones are thrown up, striking the underside of the car while being driven. The underside of the car is not insured.
- - Damages resulting from driving in places where driving is banned, such as paths, tracks, banks of snow, ice, unbridged rivers or streams, beaches, places only accessible at low tide, or other trackless areas. The car is not insured when crossing rivers or driving in water of any kind.
- - River crossing must be done with extreme care.
- - Damages to the car caused by driving on mountain roads and roads marked F on a map or a road sign, including Kjölur (road 35), Kaldidalur (road 550) and Sprengisandur (road 26) routes. (This does not extend to 4wd and all wheel drive cars accepted by Geysir for use on mountain roads – approved cars are insured on all marked roads and tracks).
- - Water damages to the car, its electrical system, accessories or engine.
- - Damages caused by sand, gravel, ash, pumice, or other kind of earth material being blown onto the vehicle.
- - No compensation will be paid for damage caused by sea spray/seawater, if the vehicle is transported by sea.

On pickup Geysir does not require any deposit from the renter during the rental period.
Due to popular demand we started to accept debit cards as a form of payment under specific conditions. To rent with a debit card the renter must purchase our insurance bundle and leave a cash deposit matching the lowered rental excess.
Our minimum age requirement is 20 years and you need to have held a valid drivers license for at least 12 months. For motorhomes, passenger vans and luxury/modified 4wd cars, the minimum age requirement is 25 years.
Our KEF airport office is open from 05:00 to 19:00 hrs every day. If you are arriving out of office hours arrangements will be made for your keys to be left in a box in reception. Once we have gathered you information we will send you a box number and access code on the day before the rental.
All our rentals include winter tyres from November 1st – April 15th
A valid credit/debit card in the driver's name with enough available funds to cover the rental excess is required at pickup. The credit/debit card must be valid for over 6 months after the rental period ends. We accept Master Card and Visa.
Each driver must provide a driving license that they have held for 1 year or more. An international driving license is only required if the license is printed with non-Roman Alphabet.
A rental voucher must be provided at the start of the rental. We do not require the voucher to be printed, mobile vouchers are accepted and encouraged.
We have three locations from where you can collect your car: from our main office at Keflavik International Airport; from our office in the Harpa Concert Hall in Reykjavik; or our representative will meet you at Akureyri airport. All our offices are shown in maps on the Locations page of the website
There are a range of extras available that can be ordered when booking online or added when you collect the car. These range from special insurances, mobile wi-fi, GPS, to child seats and tow ropes. A can be viewed on our insurances and extras page
At Geysir we have a wide range of vehicles so unfortunately we can not guarantee the make and model of all of them. On our specialty 4x4 and luxury vehicles we will go above and beyond to make sure you get the car you selected. Sometimes we may have troubles providing the exact model and in those cases we reserve the right to provide you with a car in the same class or an upgrade
All modifications and changes can be done after you reserve. Upgrading your rental is possible and can be done before your arrival, at pickup and even after you arrive. All upgrades depend on availability. If you wish to modify your reservation before you arrive please contact our customer service on info@geysir.is
Unfortunately no refunds can be made for unused rental days unless the amendment has been made 48 hours before the rental start date.
In the case of a mechanical breakdown, Geysir offers an emergency roadside assistance available during office hours. Geysir also offers a 24/7 emergency phone if a car will break down out of office hours. Geysir has a wide net of service partners all around the island that can assist our customers in the case of a breakdown. In the case of an accident the customer must inform the breakdown assistance as soon as possible. Towing fees and other charges may apply if Geysir has to recover the car
You may not drive on mountain or highland roads, or roads marked “F” on a map or a road sign, unless the car is a 4 wheel drive or all wheel drive, intended and accepted for such use by Geysir. The renter/driver may not drive the car where prohibited by law, i.e. off beaten tracks or marked roads, in unmarked paths or tracks, on beaches or other sandy areas, or any other trackless areas. Damage incurred while crossing rivers or large streams will not be covered by any insurance so any river crossing should be done with extreme caution. When planning a trip to Iceland we highly recommend planning your trip in advance and check out the road conditions before you set off. Up to date information about road conditions can be found on www.road.is
For any mechanical failures phone the Roadside Assistance team on 455 0005. They will find the best way to deal with the problem.
The speed limits are well marked on all roads and the maximum is 90 km/h on the open road, down to 30 km/h in built up areas. If caught speeding fines are very expensive.
If you´re unfortunate to get a parking ticket take it to any bank and pay it as soon as you can. It´s cheaper if you pay immediately. If Geysir has to deal with it there is an administration charge added to the price.
The short answer is you should exercise caution at all times. High winds are one of the main causes of damage and accidents and you should really try to restrict your travelling in these conditions. Always check the relevant agencies websites for up to date information and make your plans accordingly. Weather: en.vedur.is Roads: road.is and Safetravel.is
Your return location and time will be stated on your rental contract. If you wish to change these details you must let us know as soon as you can in our phone 455 0000 or on info@geysir.is. Always leave the minimum of two hours between the vehicle return time and your flight check-in time.
When you return to a Geysir location, make sure the fuel tank is completely full, take all your luggage out of the car and take the keys into the office. The process usually takes a few minutes. However, if damages are to be dealt with it will take longer. It is the renter´s responsibility to leave enough time between returning the car and the flight check-in time.
